ECOTECT: Visualisation & Import / Export

ECOTECT includes its own interactive 3D modelling system - mainly because traditional CAD tools tend to be inappropriate at the sketch design stage, other than as a pencil and paper replacement. The interface in ECOTECT is aimed squarely at the building designer, for use as a conceptual design tool.

One of the benefits of using the ECOTECT system is that you can imbue the model with important architectural information, making it possible for ECOTECT to provide all sorts of analysis feedback and perform simulations. An additional benefit is that, because this architectural information is already there, ECOTECT can translate it into formats that can be used directly by other building analysis tools.

...including features like, real-time section cutting (cut lines shown in red).

Version 5.2+ sees the introduction of OpenGL visualisation functions. OpenGL allows ECOTECT to take advantage of the capabilities of your graphics card to generate real time hidden line and shaded 3D renderings of your model.

A number of unique features have been included in the OpenGL display functions which allow the designer to add varying levels of 'sketchiness' to the model display, clearly showing that it is still an evolving idea.

Import / Export

The time and energy you invest in an ECOTECT model is more than justified by the amount of analysis and feedback it can provide. However, the intention is that you further capitalise on this investment by exporting the data to more focussed thermal engines or more sophisticated lighting analysis tools. Thus consulting engineers can spend their time (and your money) more effectively by not having to first remodel your design in their tool of choice - you simply provide them with the base output files or even the ECOTECT model if they too have the software.

New export routines are added to ECOTECT on a regular basis. If you use a particular tool and have access to its input file requirements, email us with the details as we are keen to add as many different export options as possible. The following are a few that already exist...
