Hi! I've just started to use ECOTECT 5.5. How can I properly model Double Skin Facade in ECOTECT? Need to estimate its thermal benefits for buildings in Kuwait. I've searched the issues posted but could not find any similar problems.
In preparation for a building model with Double Skin Facade, I made a simple room model with a cavity in front of the window. The cavity has its own window facing the outside acting as the "double skin". Thermal analysis shows no solar radiation going thru the cavity window and thru the window of the room - zero solar gain for the room. The cavity and the room are modelled as separate zones. Solar radiation should be able to reach the 2nd zone thru the two windows. I also tried setting their "common" walls as voids but still the same result. Please see what I need to change in the model or if this is possible with ECOTECT.
Thanks in advance!

Double skin
RESPONSE FROM AUGUST 14th POST
Jun,
The reason it isn't registering any solar gains is because Ecotect cannot calculate solar gains that have to pass through two window elements.
I have modified your model to have opening around your window on your cavity zone, but now your zone is open and no thermal calc can be done for it.
Another way to go about it is to offset your zone from one another just a bit.
A model is worth a thousand words...see attached.

Aditional question of Doble skin facade
Hi Olivier,
I'm reviewing this post and it's very interestig the solution that you proposses in the model, but i have some questions:
- Why is necessary to define a external cavity wall as "opening"?. You explain that ECOTECT have a problem with the radiation pass through two window elements, but finally you have two windows at the model, and the radiations can pass to the room.
- Why is necessary to create two "opening walls" into the cavity zone (with a void inside in the second wall).
- Why do you say that the cavity zone is open and no thermal calc can be done for it. I see at the results that it's possible to obtain monthly loads and temperature profile.
I'm trying to simulate the insidence of "solar Galleries" to the rooms of a buildings, and i think that this is a very similar approach to simulate it.
Thanks in advance,
Fabian
Doble skin facade
I am also interested in double skins and it would be great if we could analyze these systems conceptually in Ecotect.
I am still in the modeling phase for a project but will need to account for the requirements of a double skin.
Fabian: Did you get any further on this? Did you get realistic results with Olivier's recommendation?
Thanks,
Yalin
Yalin, I don't have any
Yalin,
I don't have any further information since december because i don't receive any response of my question.
I've a lot of doubts about modelling proposed by olivier (like expresed in my mail) but....
